East Lothian

East Lothian (formerly known as Haddingtonshire) is a beautiful region and district of Scotland, and located to the south east of the country. East Lothian borders West Lothian to the west, and Midlothian to the south west.

With 30 miles of stunning coastline, East Lothian stretches from Musselburgh on the River Forth, all the way down the North Sea to the Borders Region.

According to the National Records of Scotland, as of June 2020 East Lothian has an estimated population of 107,090 people. And records from Wikipedia state that East Lothian covers an area of 262.2 square miles.

With an incredible 21 golf courses positioned along a 30 mile stretch of coast line, East Lothian is aptly named ‘The Golf coast’

1. Musselburgh

Musselburgh is the largest town in East Lothian, and has a population of 21,100. Lying to the east of Edinburgh, Musselburgh gets it’s name from the many mussel beds on the shores of The River Forth.

Musselburgh has two of the oldest golf courses in the world. The Musselburgh Old Links, and Royal Musselburgh.

Records show that golf has been played at The Old Links since 1672, and The Open has been held here 6 times between 1874 and 1889.

Royal Musselburgh, situated just up the road, is the 6th oldest golf club in the world.
