About me…
Hi, I’m
Tom Halliburton
Hi, my name is Tom Halliburton and I live in East Lothian, Scotland with my wife and two amazing boys!
My passion for online marketing began after working for a computer training company way back in 2002. At that time my role was to find new recruits for all the computer training classes, and I was expected to get on the phone and make at least 90 cold calls per day, and drum up some new business! Out of those 90 cold calls I needed to make at least one sale, then source 90 more leads for the following day. As you could imagine it was a numbers game, and my boss’s thinking was, the more people I called, the more sales I would make! In reality it was the most nonsensical monotonous way of selling I had ever experienced. In fact it wasn’t really selling at all, as I was mostly talking to the wrong people, such as secretaries, gatekeepers and receptionists who were intent on getting rid of salespeople like me!Even when I did get through to the right person. I was frequently hung up upon, or told that one of my colleagues had already called that day and was told not to call again! There was no structure and our sales manager didn’t seem to care…just so long as we made our 90 calls a day!Looking back on it, it was harassment on a grand scale. Pressuring people to buy something that they didn’t want or perhaps even need.We had developed the reputation of an aggressive sales company that people would try to avoid at all costs. And for most of my working day on the phone, I was perceived as an annoying pest rather than a welcome guest. As you could imagine, I didn’t overstay my welcome in that job, and the company in question has long since ceased operations.Computer training aside, I still needed to learn how to sell, but in order to sell something to someone, I needed ‘that someone’ to be interested in whatever it was that I was selling! It makes total sense right? That’s when I got into marketing, but rather than studying marketing theory at a College, I decided to learn from people who were actually doing it successfully in the real world. I bought courses, read books and listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts over the years.I learned that brand advertising/marketing was really only for the big boys, and perhaps worked well for companies the size of Coca Cola or Nike. However smaller businesses couldn’t really afford that kind of luxury, and needed to adopt a more accountable, streamlined and measurable approach when spending their marketing budget. Direct response marketing on the other hand, is designed to attract only people who are genuinely interested in a product or service, then prompt them to ‘raise their hand’ and opt in for more detailed information.
This not only helps them make an informed decision about the product or service they are enquiring about, but also the trust and integrity of the company supplying the information!Marketing this way not only builds an audience of interested prospects, but also builds an asset your business can yield from for years to come.If you would like to know more about how this type of marketing could help your business, then please click the Contact button above and I will get back to as soon as I can.
Kind regards,
Tom Halliburton.
